Leclerc: the end of plastic

E.Leclerc stores are taking a further step in their fight against plastic pollution. Since the 1st of May 2021, the plastic bag has disappeared from the fruit and vegetable shelves. It is replaced by organic cotton nets, washable and reusable, as well as by kraft bags with recyclable paper windows. Although bio-sourced, i.e. made up mainly of plant materials, the plastic bags available in the fruit and vegetable section were not recyclable. Removing them is equivalent to 1,350 tonnes less plastic in the fruit and vegetable aisle and represents a reduction of 8,350 tonnes of the plastic footprint each year.

The thorny issue of fruit and vegetable packaging remains to be resolved. In less than a year, on 1 January 2022 to be exact, plastic packaging for fruit and vegetable packages weighing less than 1.5 kilograms will have to disappear from the shelves. This provision is included in amendment CD669 adopted on the 20th of November 2019 in the National Assembly as part of the examination of the law on the fight against waste and the circular economy.

Since 2019, the E.Leclerc retailer has managed to eliminate 400 tonnes of plastic from the fruit and vegetable section. Savings have continued with the launch from December 2020, in the “Mon panier Primeur” range, of around twenty citrus fruit references (oranges, lemons, clementines, mandarins and pomelos) packaged in zero plastic recyclable paper and bamboo fibre packaging.
